5 Tips to Ace Your Next Dental Exam
August 6, 2023
A new school year is here, which means life is about to get a little busier. While you work hard in the classroom, study, and participate in extracurricular activities, it can lead to bad habits that can affect your oral health. Here are 5 back-to-school tips to keep your teeth and gums healthy during the year.
1. Commit to Brushing and Flossing
The American Dental Association recommends brushing your teeth at least twice daily for 2 minutes using a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. If you’re snacking more often, strive to brush after every meal. A travel-sized oral hygiene kit makes it easy to keep your teeth clean while on the go. Besides brushing your teeth, floss at least once a day to remove any food debris or plaque missed by your toothbrush.
2. Wear an Athletic Mouthguard
If you play sports, don’t forget to wear an athletic mouthguard. Although you may never expect a dental emergency to happen to you, 1 in 6 Americans experiences one annually. Many are sports-related but can be avoided with a mouthguard. It will protect your teeth and oral structures in case of an injury to your mouth.
3. Cut Out Sugary Foods and Drinks
Soda, candy, cookies, and other sweet treats can help you through a studying session. Unfortunately, they feed cavity-causing bacteria. It’s best to reduce the amount of sugar you have to keep your mouth cavity-free.
4. Drink More Water
Water keeps your body functioning at its best. Healthcare professionals recommend drinking at least eight 8oz glasses of water daily to stay hydrated. However, your dental health also relies on water. Hydration keeps your mouth moist to combat oral bacteria growth. Every sip of water rinses your mouth in between brushing and flossing to keep preventable dental problems at bay.
5. Chew Sugarless Gum
If you have a habit of chewing on your fingernails or a pencil while concentrating, it’s best to break the habit. Instead, reach for a piece of sugarless gum. It won’t damage your teeth like inedible objects. It also increases saliva production to keep your mouth moist and clean.
Don’t let the new school year lead to bad news the next time you see your dentist. Give your teeth and gums the attention they deserve to ensure your smile stays healthy and beautiful throughout the year.
