New Teeth No-Go’s: 3 Foods You Shouldn’t Eat with Dentures

As great as today’s dentures are, even they have their limits. A key example is that they lack the chewing power of natural teeth, meaning they don’t handle certain foods well. Another way to put it is that you simply can’t eat normally with dentures. For proof of this fact, let your Oshkosh dentist share the relevant details. Here are three foods you shouldn’t eat with dentures and why you should consider an implant-based treatment.

Foods You Shouldn’t Eat with Dentures

Dentures will restore your full smile, but they won’t do the same for your bite. These devices just don’t have the chewing power that natural teeth do. For this reason, foods you shouldn’t eat with them include:

Steak & Chewy Meat

If you’re a fan of BBQ meats, the bad news is that such foods aren’t suited for dentures. It’d be best if you avoided them in the future.

The problem is that steaks (and similarly chewy meat) are hard to chew. Due to their texture and composition, they force their eaters to bite very frequently. That means having them with dentures would damage your prosthetic teeth or even dislodge them. To prevent these outcomes, you should either refrain from chewy meats or cut them into bite-sized pieces first.

Crunchy Fruits & Raw Veggies

Once you have dentures, you should probably quit snacking on apples or celery. Your new prosthetics aren’t a good match for crunchy fruits and raw veggies.

Note that many plant-based foods have very tough skin. To pierce through that layer and reach beyond it, you’d need to have a very strong bite. Dentures don’t provide you with the chewing power for something like that. Instead, they struggle with the crunchy surfaces of some fruits and vegetables.

Sticky Sweets & Treats

They may not have rough textures, but sticky candies are another no-go for dentures. Trying to have them with your new prosthetics would be a challenge.

Remember, treats like caramels and gummies often cling to chewing surfaces. It can get quite tricky just removing them from natural teeth. With that said, chewing such things would likely dislodge your dentures from your mouth. Getting them off your prosthetics would also be a real hassle.

Why Consider Implant Dentures?

The above food restrictions only apply to normal dentures. Implant-based kinds would let you enjoy all sorts of meals again.

Indeed, “implant” dentures can handle foods that regular ones can’t. Because they secure themselves with dental implants, they restore most of your bite’s force.  The result is that they let you chew your food just like you normally would. In other words, they’ll put chewy meats, crunchy fruits and veggies, and sticky candies back on the menu.

You shouldn’t dwell too much on what you shouldn’t eat with dentures. If possible, organize your diet for your restored smile’s sake.
