Why Skipping That Trip to The Dentist Is a Bad Idea
May 1, 2024
There are many reasons you may consider putting off your next dental visit. Maybe you’re simply too busy, or you’re worried about the cost. Maybe you suffer from dental phobia, or maybe you just don’t think you need to see the dentist because your teeth look and feel fine. But skipping your checkup appointment is never a good idea. In fact, your justifications for not going can have the opposite effect and make things a lot harder for you in the long run.
Cost
If you’re hesitant to visit the dentist because you think you’ll save a little cash by skipping your semi-annual appointment, the truth is that doing this can eventually cost you even more. That’s because things like cavities or gum disease can easily worsen with time, requiring more serious intervention that will cost more than it would have if your dentist caught and treated it sooner.
Time
You lead a hectic life, but that’s no excuse to cast aside your oral health. If a cleaning and exam are time consuming now, imagine how much longer you will spend getting fillings or a root canal later. Between the actual procedure and the recovery time, it’s much faster to just attend your appointments on schedule and reduce the risk of needing a lengthy intervention!
Fear
Dental phobia (also known as odontophobia) is the fear of dental treatment. Whether you’ve had a scary or painful experience at the dentist before, or you’re simply afraid of the unknown, odontophobia is a real thing, and not something to take lightly. In fact, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that upwards of 20 percent of people in the world have some degree of odontophobia!
Thankfully, there’s no reason to fear the dentist. You are less likely to need any kind of medical intervention if you attend your regular appointments, because often weak spots can be strengthened before they turn into cavities, and better brushing and flossing tips can help ward off things like gum disease. If you do find yourself afraid to go to your exam, speak to your dentist about things you can do to make your appointment easier. Options such as nitrous oxide or oral sedatives can help relax you during your time in the dental chair, so you’ll leave with a healthy, happy smile!
Remember, it may seem like you’re saving time, money, or stress by skipping your dental checkups, but putting off preventative oral care can take it’s toll on your schedule, your wallet, and your health.
